Violet Sorrengail trained to be a scribe. Her mother, the most feared general in the kingdom, sends her to a war college for dragon riders instead, where cadets die constantly.

Day one means crossing a narrow stone bridge high above the ground, in the rain. Violet is small and fragile, and everyone expects her to be dead in a week, especially Xaden Riorson. His father led a rebellion that Violet's mother crushed, and his father was executed for it.

When the dragons choose their riders, Violet gets Tairn, the biggest and most powerful dragon in the valley, plus a tiny golden dragon who can stop time. Tairn is mated to Xaden's dragon, so if one rider dies the other probably does too. Her worst enemy now has to keep her alive, and enemies turn into lovers.

Violet discovers she can wield lightning, and that the kingdom has lied to her. The monsters from bedtime stories, dark wielders and wyverns, are real, leadership has been hiding them, and Xaden has been secretly fighting them all along.

How it ends

In the final battle Violet kills a dark wielder with lightning but is stabbed with a poisoned blade. She wakes up in a rebel city, and the person standing over her is her brother Brennan, who was supposed to be dead.
