Snow visits Katniss at home with a simple threat: convince the whole country the romance is real, or her family dies. On the Victory Tour, Katniss speaks about Rue in District 11, an old man whistles Rue's tune and raises three fingers, and Peacekeepers shoot him on the spot. Peeta proposes on live TV, but the uprisings keep spreading.
Back in District 12, a brutal new Head Peacekeeper whips Gale in the square for hunting, and Katniss throws herself in front of the whip. Then Snow announces the 75th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell with tributes reaped from past victors. Katniss is the only female victor from District 12. Haymitch is picked, and Peeta volunteers in his place.
At the interview, Katniss's wedding dress burns away into a mockingjay, Peeta tells the country she's pregnant, and her stylist Cinna is beaten and dragged off in front of her. The arena is a giant clock where every hour brings a new horror: poison fog, killer monkeys, blood rain and birds screaming in her family's voices. When Peeta's heart stops, Finnick Odair brings him back.
How it ends
Beetee plans to run a wire from the lightning tree to the water. Katniss realizes the real target, ties the wire to an arrow and shoots the force field, blowing the arena apart. She wakes on a hovercraft: half the victors and the Head Gamemaker were rebels all along, and she was the plan. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol, and District 12 has been destroyed.
