Lowen Ashleigh is a broke writer about to lose her apartment when Jeremy Crawford makes her an offer. His wife Verity is a bestselling author, but after a car crash she can't move or speak, and someone has to finish her series.
Show the full plot (spoilers)
Lowen moves into the Crawfords' isolated house in Vermont to go through Verity's notes. The family has already been through a lot: their twin daughters, Chastin and Harper, died months apart, Chastin from an allergic reaction and Harper by drowning in the lake.
In Verity's office Lowen finds a hidden autobiography. In it Verity writes that she never wanted her daughters, that she was jealous of how much Jeremy loved them, and that she blamed Harper for Chastin's death. So she took Harper out on the lake, flipped the canoe on purpose, saved her son Crew and let Harper drown.
Meanwhile Lowen and Jeremy fall for each other, and strange things keep happening. Lowen sees Verity standing at the top of the stairs, and Crew says Mommy told him not to talk to her.
How it ends
Lowen shows Jeremy the manuscript. He storms into Verity's room, she reacts, and it's clear she has been faking all along. Jeremy kills her, and they make it look like she choked in her sleep; the police call it an accident. Months later a pregnant Lowen finds a letter under a floorboard in Verity's bedroom. Verity says the manuscript was only a writing exercise from a villain's point of view, and that when Jeremy read it he tried to kill her, so she played helpless to survive. Lowen destroys the letter, and Jeremy never finds out. Which version is true is left to the reader.
